How to Use Snaps in 3ds Max for Architectural Visualization

Learn how to use 2.5D and 3D snaps in 3ds Max to model more accurately, close gaps, follow plans, and place objects with better control.

Introduction

Snaps are one of the most useful tools in 3ds Max for architectural visualization.

They help you move objects and edit geometry with precision instead of guessing by eye. This is important when you are closing wall gaps, following floor plans, aligning edges, or placing assets in a scene.

If you are new to snaps, they may feel a little unpredictable at first. Once you understand the snap modes and a few key settings, they become much easier to control.


Where to Find Snap Modes

The snap tools are located on the main toolbar.

Press and hold the left mouse button on the Snap icon to see the available modes:

  • 2D Snap
  • 2.5D Snap
  • 3D Snap

You can also press S to enable or disable snaps.

Tip: Use S as a quick toggle. Turn snaps on only when you need precision, then turn them off when you want to move freely.


Which Snap Mode Should You Use?

For archviz work, you will usually use 2.5D Snap and 3D Snap.

2D Snap

2D Snap works only on the active construction grid.

For architectural visualization, this is usually less useful because we often need to snap to model geometry, not only to the grid.

In most archviz workflows, you can ignore this mode.


2.5D Snap

2.5D Snap is the best starting point for most architectural modeling tasks.

It works well in orthographic views such as:

  • Top
  • Front
  • Left
  • Right

This mode gives you accurate snapping while keeping the movement easier to control in 2D views.

Recommended starting point: Use 2.5D Snap when working in Top, Front, Left, or Right views.


3D Snap

3D Snap allows snapping in any view, including:

  • Perspective view
  • Camera view
  • Orthographic views

This gives you more control and speed, especially when working directly in the viewport.

However, 3D Snap can also create unexpected results if you use it carelessly in 2D views. If something moves in a strange direction, switch back to 2.5D Snap and try again.

Important: When using 3D Snap, axis constraints become very important. They help prevent objects or vertices from moving in the wrong direction.


Open the Snap Settings

To adjust snap behavior, right-click the Snap button on the main toolbar.

This opens the snap settings.

The most important tabs for this workflow are:

  • Snaps
  • Options

The Most Useful Snap Types

In the Snaps tab, you can choose which parts of your geometry 3ds Max can snap to.

The most useful snap types for archviz are:

  • Vertex
  • Endpoint
  • Midpoint
  • Edge / Segment
  • Face
  • Center Face

You do not need to enable everything at once. In fact, enabling too many snap types can make snapping harder to control.


Start with Vertex Snap

For most architectural visualization work, Vertex is the best snap type to use by default.

A vertex is a point on your geometry. Snapping to vertices is predictable and works in many situations.

Use Vertex Snap when you need to:

  • Close gaps between walls.
  • Align corners.
  • Match imported plans.
  • Move editable poly points accurately.
  • Connect pieces of geometry cleanly.

Recommended default: Keep Vertex enabled most of the time. Enable other snap types only when Vertex is not enough.


Example: Closing a Gap Between Walls

A common modeling problem is a small gap between two wall pieces.

Instead of moving the wall by eye, use snaps.

Basic workflow

  1. Enable 2.5D Snap.
  2. Open the snap settings.
  3. Enable Vertex.
  4. Select the wall you want to move.
  5. Activate the Move tool.
  6. Snap from one wall vertex to the matching vertex on the other wall.

This lets you close the gap accurately.

You can use the same idea inside an Editable Poly object. Select a vertex, edge, or polygon, then move it using snaps.

For most cases, selecting and moving vertices gives the most control.


Edge / Segment Snap

Edge / Segment lets you snap to any point along an edge.

This is useful when the exact point is not a vertex, but you still need to align something to an edge.

Use it when you need to snap along:

  • The top edge of a wall.
  • The side of a slab.
  • A long straight segment.
  • A model edge that does not have enough vertices.

The downside is that it can be less specific than Vertex Snap. If you only need to target an exact corner, Vertex Snap is usually cleaner.


Endpoint Snap

Endpoint snaps to the end of an object or segment.

In many architectural examples, it behaves similarly to Vertex Snap because the endpoint often sits on the same position as a vertex.

Use Endpoint Snap when you specifically need the end of a line or segment.

If Vertex Snap already gives you the point you need, you may not need Endpoint enabled.


Midpoint Snap

Midpoint snaps to the middle of a segment.

This is useful when you need to place something exactly halfway along an edge or line.

For example, you might use it to align an object to the center of a wall segment.

Enable it only when you need it. If Midpoint is always on, 3ds Max may try to snap to the middle of edges when you actually want a vertex.


Face and Center Face Snaps

Face and Center Face snaps are useful for placing objects on surfaces.

They become especially helpful when combined with 3D Snap, because you can snap directly to faces in perspective or camera views.

Use these snap types when placing objects on:

  • Floors
  • Walls
  • Countertops
  • Tables
  • Other flat surfaces

They are not always needed for basic modeling, so keep them disabled until the task requires them.


Keep Snap Settings Simple

A common beginner mistake is enabling too many snap types at the same time.

This can make 3ds Max jump between many possible snap targets, which feels confusing.

A cleaner workflow is:

  1. Keep Vertex enabled by default.
  2. Add Edge / Segment, Midpoint, or Face only when needed.
  3. Turn extra snap types off when the task is finished.

This makes snapping more predictable.


Adjust the Snap Marker

In the Options tab, you can control the snap marker display.

The marker is the green cross that appears when 3ds Max finds a snap point.

You can adjust its size using the marker size value.

The default value of 50 works well for most workflows.

You can also hide the marker by disabling the display option, but it is usually better to keep it visible. The marker helps you see exactly where the snap will happen.


Snap to Frozen Objects

Enable Snap to Frozen Objects.

This option allows 3ds Max to snap to objects even when they are frozen.

This is very useful in architectural scenes because you may freeze reference objects to avoid selecting them by accident.

For example, you might freeze:

  • Imported CAD plans.
  • Reference walls.
  • Existing geometry.
  • Background objects.

With this option enabled, you can still use those objects as snapping references.

Tip: Freeze reference geometry to protect it, but keep Snap to Frozen Objects enabled so it remains useful for alignment.


Use Axis Constraints for Better Control

Axis constraints are very important when using snaps.

They let you lock movement to a specific axis, which prevents geometry from moving in unwanted directions.

Without axis constraints, a vertex or object can move freely. This can create small mistakes that are hard to see at first but cause problems later.

With axis constraints enabled, you can move only along the selected direction.


Axis Constraint Shortcuts

Use these shortcuts to choose the movement axis:

A practical workflow is to switch between them depending on the task.

Use 2.5D Snap when:

  • Working in Top, Front, Left, or Right views.
  • Editing plans or wall layouts.
  • Closing gaps in flat views.
  • You want predictable 2D movement.

Use 3D Snap when:

  • Working in perspective or camera view.
  • Snapping to faces.
  • Placing objects in the scene.
  • You need more freedom and speed.

If snapping starts to behave strangely, switch modes. Many snap problems come from using the wrong snap mode for the view.


Common Beginner Mistakes

Enabling Too Many Snap Types

Too many active snap targets can make snapping feel random.

Start with Vertex and add other snap types only when needed.


Forgetting Axis Constraints

Snaps help you find a target, but they do not automatically know which direction you want to move.

Use axis constraints to keep the movement clean.


Using 3D Snap in 2D Views Without Care

3D Snap is powerful, but it can create unexpected movement in 2D views.

If this happens, switch back to 2.5D Snap.


Moving by Eye Instead of Snapping

Small gaps and misalignments can cause problems later.

Use snaps when modeling walls, plans, and structural elements. It is faster and more accurate than guessing.
