Installing and Using Relink Bitmaps for 3ds Max

Introduction

Missing textures are a common problem in 3ds Max, especially in archviz scenes.

Relink Bitmaps is a free script that helps you quickly find and reconnect those missing bitmap files.

Instead of manually searching for each texture, you choose a folder and let the script scan for the missing files.

Download the Script

First, download the latest version of Relink Bitmaps from the script website.

For a larger library, it is usually better to choose a main folder and let the script search inside it.

This allows Relink Bitmaps to search inside every folder contained within the selected directory.

You do not need to know the exact folder where every texture is stored.

This is useful when assets are organized like this:

  • Main asset folder
    • Beds
    • Sofas
    • Chairs
    • Wood textures
    • Fabric textures
    • Metal textures

Instead of selecting each folder manually, choose the main folder and let the script search everything inside it.

Tip: Searching subfolders can be slower, but it is often the safest option when you are not sure where the textures are located.


Useful Option: Low Memory / Huge Scene

Most of the time, you can leave the extra options as they are.

The one option worth knowing is Low Memory / Huge Scene.

Use this if you are working on a very large scene and your computer is running out of memory during the relinking process.

This option is mainly for heavy production files.

For normal scenes, you usually do not need to enable it.


Configure Default Options

Relink Bitmaps also includes a Configure button.

This lets you set the default options the script uses when it opens.

This is useful if you always use the same workflow, such as:

  • Searching from a main library folder
  • Keeping Search Subfolders enabled
  • Using the same saved paths often

Setting defaults can make the script faster to use in future projects.


Once you have selected your path and search options, click Relink.

Relink Bitmaps will start searching for the missing texture files.

The time it takes depends on:

  • The size of your scene
  • The number of missing textures
  • The size of the folder being searched

  2. Check missing files in Asset Tracking.

Common Beginner Mistakes

Choosing a Folder That Is Too Specific

If you choose the wrong small folder, Relink Bitmaps may not find the textures.

When you are unsure, choose a higher-level folder and enable Search Subfolders.

Forgetting to Refresh

If you do not press Refresh, the script may not show the current missing files.

Refresh first, then relink.

Not Saving the Toolbar Layout

After adding the Relink Bitmaps button, save the user interface.

This keeps the button available the next time you open 3ds Max.
